It looks like there have been a few problems with the blog servers. We have been blocked from updating it since yesterday and we have lost some of our posts.
A backout of some updates by our hosts seems to have wiped three articles away.
I have been able to resubmit one so apologies if you have read it before. We'll see if we can find the other two....

Labels on the Blog
You may have seen some extra red text being added to the bottom of our posts. In some places on the internet they are called tags and in others keywords, but here they are labels.
The sharp eyed amongst you will also have seen a large box full of seemingly random text beside the posts. That box is called our cloud.
Every time we post a message here we now try and add at least one label to it. When we do it attaches it as a red link to the post and adds it to the cloud. By clicking on either the text on the post or the cloud it will show you a list of all the posts on a similar subject.
The cloud also let's you see which are the most popular subjects we cover. The numbers in brackets gives you the number of posts that label has been attached to and the more posts a subject has the more prominent it becomes in the cloud. We have only started using the labels so we are slowly working our way back through old posts and adding them retrospectively. The World Wars are the most popular subjects but we are going to try and bring you posts from all aspects of Scottish Military History so you should see other subjects 'grow'.
If you are new to this blog you may want to click on some labels and check out some of our older posts on a subject you are interested in. Or why not live a little and click on something you wouldn't normally read.
Consider it throwing a dart at a dartboard or pin the tail on the donkey! Just move your pointer over the cloud at random and click.

Over the past few months Adam and I been working hard on the blog to bring you a selection of articles and news which we hope is of interest.
However, the SMRG isn't just the work of the two of us. And with that in mind we'd like to extend an open invitation to anyone who is interested in contributing.
There are a number of regular features which you might like to add to:

There are a number of regular features which you might like to add to:
- On this Day in Scottish Military History: we discuss an event in the past and its relevance to Scottish Military History.
- Who's Who - a look at the career and life of a figure from Scottish history. This can be anyone from the lowliest private to the highest-ranking Field Marshall.
- The Story Behind The Name: we pick a name from a memorial and bring their story to life.
- Object of the Month - do you have an item that might be of interest?

World War II Today
Thanks again to the lovely Ronnie Scott, we have another website of interest today.
Using "creative commons" material, this blog follows the course of the Second World War seventy years after it happened.
It features previously unpublished combat reports from those on the front line and diary entries from all affected by the war, and also has some fascinating photographs.
You can also use links at the top of the page to see previous entries, so you can look back on events already seventy years past such as hte Battle of Britain and the evacuation of Dunkirk.
Well worth checking it out: World War II Today.

We're still here...
Things have been quiet lately on the blog, but we've not been idle.
The Scottish Military Research Group have got a few plans for 2010, whihc we'll hopefully be able to share with you later in the year.
As for the blog, I'm looking into getting some more people involved, so keep an eye out for that. I also want to get more book reviews done. I actually have a couple that I need to get round to writing up...

One of the big things on the internet these days is "social networking". This takes many shapes, this blog being one of them. Sites such as Facebook and MySpace have been around for a while, and they have been joined fairly recently by one called Twitter.
In case you've never heard of it, Twitter is a site where you can post updates of around 170 characters - it makes you keep things short and to the point. Some may think that rather frivolous, but many people have got on board and are now "tweeting" regularly.
Some of them may be of interest to those of you with an interest in Scotland and military history.
Yours truly can be found here, although I wouldn't expect much in the way of updates from me, since I never seem to have the time.
Genealogist and Friend of the SMRG Chris Paton can be found here, posting regularly on events and happenings in the Scottish Genealogical world. His blog, incidentally is also worth a look and can be found here.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission have been social networking for a while (they can be found on Facebook) and have got in on the Twitter act here. They post fairly regularly with some interesting items of news and updates.
Others "Twitterers" include:
The Western Front Association
The National Archives
The Imperial War Museum
The Australian War Memorial
That's just a few of the "bigger" names - there are plenty of familiar names out there if you have a browse.

Photos
You may have noticed that the photos on the blog appear to be cut off at the right hand side.
I've been looking into it, and I'll admit I have no idea how to fix it.
Anyone got any ideas?
