Pvt David Smith Paton was with the 2/10th in Russia and was one of the men killed on 27th October 1918- 2 weeks after his 20th birthday and 15 days before the Armistice. His family would've celebrated the end of hostilities expecting their boy to return home safe and sound. They must've been devastated on hearing news of his death after their initial relief. My grandmother never talked of her older brother or mentioned him to anyone in the family. I do remember seeing a photograph of a "boy" in uniform among family photos she kept but when I asked who he was she became upset and changed the subject. I didn't pursue my questioning. I'm glad we finally found our "lost boy" and I'm incredibly proud of a young man from across the generations I never knew yet feel an incredibly strong bond. We will remember him. He was born in Scone, Perthshire in 1893. In July 1916 he joined the 16th Battalion Highland Light Infantry (D company). It appears he killed on the 18th November 1916 during the 16th Battalion's action on the 18th. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. I met him several times in 60's and early 70's and he often talked of that time. He was involved in transport of supplies to the 'front', where ever it was, by mule trains and horse, and a dreadful time was had by all.
He also assisted in transported wounded back to the River (Dvina?).
On one occasion having been allocated a Cabin due to his rank for that trip he gave it up to wounded soldiers and slept on deck. The ship was shelled and one shell penetrated to his cabin and those within were killed.
He wrote essays on his experiences there in his later years, and submitted them into writing competitions and gained some recognition.
I never saw them but recall collecting an award for him for one of his stories from an Embassy in London. He was a regular letter writer to local newspapers.
An interesting link to World Politics of today and a forgotten and sad mission over a century ago. They were ...Definitely Sutherland Rifle Volunteers. They were raised in 1859 and based their uniform on that of the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders. After the 1881 Childers' Reforms the A&S Highlanders adopted the old 93rd uniform which had only minor differences to the Sutherland Volunteers uniform (hose tops, cap badge etc.). Your confusion is understandable as both units shared details as small as pleating style in their kilts but this man is absolutely a volunteer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3318734705907328932.post-78327008495095621862021-01-01T01:28:16.829+00:002021-01-01T01:28:16.829+00:00I grew up with this picture and I have an original...I grew up with this picture and I have an original copy. My grandfather John Cuthill Plant #12077 born in Shettleson in 1896, orphaned at 6, joined 1 Bn HLI as a bandsboy in 1912 and was sent to India where he served until 1915. He then served in Mesopotamia 1917-1919. He is in this picture front row bottom left. He went on to serve in N Africa w/ HLI in WW2. He never talked much of the war but did have some stories about his time in Malta with Niven and Trubshawe. Those two got in a lot of trouble according to my g/f. I have several items of my g/f HLI kit and his full medals. I live in Canada and tried to get to the regimental museum on a trip to Glasgow but it was closed the day I was able to go. I look forward to getting there again in better days.
